E17 – Women’s Empowerment Through Self-Defence

I sometimes wonder, at what point in life, humanity decided that women are not equal partners to men. I am not sure when women got the title that they are weaker, not as capable, and deserve to be paid less… and even worse, situations such as domestic violence, treating women as second class citizens by law in some parts of the world, and compensation marriages which I will cover in the future…

I personally had the privilege to meet extraordinary women, smart, strong, and capable to overcome any challenges in life and I am in awe of the amazing work they do …

As part of the Woman on a Mission series, I am excited to share my interview with one of these amazing women, Lina Khalifeh from the Vital Voices family.

Lina is the Founder and owner of SheFighter (The first women-only self-defense studio started in Jordan) and replicated in 6 countries globally.

SheFighter is designed to empower women physically, mentally, and emotionally through self-defense training.

The studio was founded in 2012 and has trained more than 18 thousand women and certified 550 Instructors all over the globe. Lina has many great achievements. Some are as follows:

  • President Barack Obama mentioned her in his speech at the White House in 2015.
  • Lina was awarded the Stuart Scott Humanitarian ENSPIRE award presented by ESPN and UFC 2019 in Los Angeles, California.
  • She was awarded “The economic empowerment Leadership” award by Hillary Clinton and Vital Voices in Washington D.C. in 2018.

Lina is also the author of She Fighter: From Trouble Maker to Global Change Maker.

and She has spoken at many international events including the World Economic Forum 2019 in Davos.

Lina is very passionate about her work and is working to spread SheFighter globally and her mission is to certify 10,000 instructors by 2030 so they can start 5,000 Studios Globally.

I met Lina for the first time at the VVGrow program by Vital Voices and then at a few events and workshops afterward. I love her passion and vision to empower other women through self-defense and when she talks about her dreams, I see no doubt or second thoughts, She talks about them as if they’ve already happened and that’s one of the most important traits of visionary leaders.

Lina is proof that dreams do come true with clear vision, persistence, and consistent action.
